Welcome to The Birds' Eye View!
My husband Al and I have created this blog for two purposes: First, and perhaps most importantly,
by presenting both the DELIGHTS and DEMANDS of bird ownership we hope to educate people about the realities of living with feathered companions. Years ago, the TV show "Baretta" inspired many to run out and buy a sulphur-crested cockatoo without knowing what to expect. Not long afterward, animal rescue facilities were overloaded with unwanted birds whose owners never expected the noise or the mess or the termperament of a large bird. But this caveat isn't limited to birds. Too many animal shelters were overloaded with chihuahuas because a celebrity was known to own one, and they imitated that person without understanding the needs or personality of the dog.
Anyone adopting ANY animal has a responsibility to find out as much about that species as possible and decide after careful consideration if they are prepared intellectually, physically, emotionally and financially to accept the burden as well as the joy of nurturing that creature. In my own youth I unintentionally killed iguanas and chameleons through ignorance of their physical needs. We wish to help others prevent such needless tragedies and provide the best homes possible for their adopted family members. Since we've lived with and studied our birds for over 25 years we want to focus on companion birds, though comments and questions about other animals are also welcome.
The second reason we've created the blos is that we want to help people who already live with birds solve any problems they may be having, share our own experiences with our own birds, and offer a forum for discussion, questions, and the sharing of ideas, photos, and comments geared toward the greater understanding of birds and promoting the health and welfare of BOTH the birds and the humans who love them.
Your input on this blog is important and welcome, and if you believe it will be of assistance to people you know who own or are considering adopting birds, PLEASE encourage them to visit here, read an article or two, or subscribe and become a member of what we hope to be a large and well-informed flock of humans and their bird companions.
Over the next few weeks we will be building and posting a list of articles we hope will be of interest to you. Any suggestions you wish to make for future articles are welcome, as are your own comments, expertise, and support.
ONCE AGAIN, WELCOME TO OUR FLOCK!!
